PORTHOS
We collared Porthos in 2021 to keep him and the rest of the Ugab West elephants safe. Porthos usually joined the Ugab River west elephants every year at the end of the dry season with two other bulls. Together, they were called the Three Musketeers. No one knew where they came from and where they went when they left the river again!
After a while, he came with just one other bull and a few years later he came on his own. The other two bulls are unfortunately assumed dead.
From the end of 2018, Porthos decided to remain permanently in the Ugab River and became part of the resident population. This came at the right time, as the number of adult bulls in this part of the Ugab River continuously declined and there was a need for bull elephants.
Porthos is a beautifully looking elephant, with almost perfectly upcurving tusks and, compared with other adult elephants, relatively small ears with zero cuts or holes!
He is extremely gentle and tolerant, however, will give clear warning signs if he feels disrespected. This is very healthy behaviour!
Porthos will make sure that younger bulls know which rank within the elephant hierarchy he enjoys and often puts the youngster in their place.
After all, a few years back we observed a younger Porthos being put into his place by an older Ugab bull. We are delighted that Porthos chose to stay in the Ugab and took over the role of guiding and teaching teenage bulls.
