EHRA’S COMMUNITY CONFLICT MITIGATION WORKSHOP

Conflicts over water and food

Conflicts over water and food mostly happen on farms or homesteads located in or near elephant corridors. Elephants smell water and food from far, and if thirsty, may break water tanks, pipes or even houses to access water. For communities to protect themselves and their property, knowledge about conflict mitigation methods and elephant behaviour plus safety procedures need to be in place.

Enhanced elephant knowledge

We aim to equip the community members with the necessary knowledge to keep themselves and their homesteads safe. Our goal is to reduce fear and intolerance towards the elephants and increase individual safety by helping the communities apply the different methods they learn during the workshops.

ELEPHANT CONFLICT MITIGATION WORKSHOPS

Elephant Conflict Mitigation Workshops (2-3 days) for farmers and community members are held in the relevant conservancies, communities or homesteads. The hands-on workshops focus on how to stay safe around elephants and how to apply different conflict prevention, mitigation and protection methods. Workshops also include information on basic elephant behaviour, biology and physiology. Additionally, the project leaders take the group into the field to observe elephants in the wild. This proves to be a significant part of the program, as through exposure, people face their fears and learn first-hand how to safely observe and even enjoy elephants.
