The Ugab River is the southernmost river in Damaraland. The elephant herds travel north to the next river, the Huab, should food and water become scarce in the Ugab River. This is another feat that puts these special animals in a class of their own. By memory, and by passing this knowledge to the youngsters, a herd of desert elephants will always know where to find water and food in times of drought.

EHRA’s Elephant Waterpoint

Base Camp is a very popular attraction for our local Ugab elephants, with Mama Afrika being the biggest herd consisting of 12 elephants. EHRA has built a manmade waterpoint close to camp, which is regularly frequented by the various Ugab elephant herds. It may be that the elephants roam through or past Base Camp during your stay, or take a refreshing “shower” in the water. The Ugab River was flowing several times already this year, with our elephants basking in the water.
