EHRA offers Namibian students the opportunity to complete their Work Integrated Learning with our conservation organisation. Students from the Nature Conservation course at NUST are welcome to apply for their 6 month WIL. Students studying tourism or conservation related courses from UNAM are also welcome to apply for internships from June of each year.
Students will work alongside the EHRA team and have the chance to experience practical conservation! The interns should be ready to work incredibly hard, assisting the staff to manage volunteer groups in constructing the water point protection walls. This is hard, dirty work! We build the walls by hand, collecting rocks and sand and mixing cement with spades in wheelbarrows!
The living conditions are basic, with camps being set at each village you work at. There are no washing facilities during this project week! Interns will be expected to liaise with overseas volunteers and assist in the management and logistics of catering for the volunteer teams. All cooking is done over the fire!
Students will also have the chance to gain specific experience with elephants and conflict mitigation methods. Every other week students will participate in the EHRA patrol which is a 4 day, 3 night wild camping experience. During this week students will learn tracking skills, how to identify elephants and elephant behaviour. Students will assist in recording GPS data for elephant and other game sightings.
Students who are ready to work hard, and want to gain knowledge on conservation management and specifically elephant conservation will thrive on this experience! Where possible students will also participate in PEACE training projects.
