ABOUT THE ELEPHANT EDUCATION CENTRE

For communities in Northern Erongo and Southern Kunene, living alongside free-roaming elephants can be challenging. Our Elephant Education Centre, located just 50km from Uis in Tsaurab Valley, is the latest step in our mission to promote peaceful coexistence between elephants and people.

As part of EHRA’s PEACE Project, the centre provides a unique educational experience focused on reducing human-wildlife conflict and fostering understanding. The PEACE Project helps local communities, including schools, conservancy game guards, elephant guards, and field guides, to learn about elephant behaviour and how to live safely with their wild neighbours.

Educational Space for Schools & Communities

In addition to being a visitor centre, the EHRA Elephant Education Centre serves as a vital resource for the local community. The indoor and outdoor education spaces can accommodate over 50 students, making it an ideal setting for schools and groups to learn about conservation and elephant behaviour. This hands-on educational experience empowers the next generation to understand and coexist with Namibia’s wildlife.

Our dedicated team is always ready to respond to community needs and provide valuable support for reducing human-elephant conflict.

Our Sponsors

The support of NUII, WildArk and AGA has been critical in providing essential funding for the new centre and helping the project stay on track. In addition to the centre, NUII and WildArk will help fund at least 20 solar-powered water pumps to provide free access to water for the community, livestock and free-roaming wildlife, replacing the existing diesel-fueled pumps which require payment for fuel to operate.

Kirstin Scholtz, General Manager of WildArk, said: “We chose EHRA's PEACE Project because of their long-standing community-based holistic approach to elephant conservation. We were looking for a conservation project that benefited both people and wildlife, and that would have an impact within 12- 24 months. EHRA already had plans for an education centre and were installing solar water pumps across the region, so it was an excellent opportunity to jump in and help them fund these projects through our partnership with UK ice-cream brand NUII.”

The support and commitment of Aktionsgemeinschaft Artenschutz (AGA) have been instrumental in protecting Namibia’s desert elephants and fostering a future of peaceful coexistence. AGA’s initial funding sparked the Centre’s development, with their ongoing contributions—including support for rebuilding after floods, solar electricity, and educational materials—totalling approximately 35,000 Euros.

It is such a pleasure to collaborate with WildArk and NUII to build EHRA's first-ever Elephant Education Centre next to EHRA's Base Camp in Damaraland, Namibia.

EHRA’s Conservation Programs Assistance, Anna Sheehama, spoke about our new Environmental Education Center in the Magazine “Conservation and the Environment in Namibia” which was recently published by the Namibian Chamber of Environment (NCE).

“One cannot talk about the conservation of a species without talking about the environment with which it interacts. The new Education Centre will therefore go beyond elephant conservation and include all aspects of environmental conservation”, Anna wrote.
