OTUMWE
The name “Otumwe” means mosquito in Otjoherero. So why would EHRA name an elephant like that??
When Otumwe was seen for the very first time, he was found in an area quite far east but within our project area. And that place is called Otumwe, presumably because mosquitos thrive in that part of Damaraland.
However, the team thought at the time that the little newborn in fact even LOOKED like a mosquito! Thankfully, elephants don’t speak Otjiherero and beautiful Otumwe will never know what his name means.
Otumwe is a wonderful young male elephant. His mother, the Duchess, is a fantastic but stubborn female. She is very dominant and the second leader of Mama Afrika. Her willfulness is the reason behind her name. She is a successful and caring mother. Nothing will get between her and her youngsters. And this also means that Otumwe grows up to be a respectful male that (hopefully) won’t get himself into too much trouble.
