DUCHESS
Hope is the youngest living desert calf in the Huab River.
She was born as a “Christmas miracle” within the drought and before the first rains of the season. We spotted her at her 5th day of life and on our last elephant patrol of the year. The first year of life is the most challenging time for newborn elephants and the survival of the calves in the desert is never a given.
We named her “Hope” because she is exactly that: Our hope for the survival of desert elephants. The calf mortality rate in the desert is extremely high and only very few calves survive. Hope is doing so well and she warms everybody’s heart with her innocent, clumsy and curious nature.
